The main objective of the Genetics and Bioengineering program is to train genetic engineers and bioengineers who have basic knowledge in the fields of genetics, bioengineering and biotechnology, who will lead technological developments in the field of bioengineering, who are equipped with the skills to transfer knowledge to practice, who are sensitive to ethics and social responsibility issues.

Education and training is carried out in the form of formal, open or distance education. In addition, practical training is carried out in laboratories and workshops within higher education institutions or in industry, health institutions and workplaces as internships or workplace training.

• To have sufficient knowledge in mathematics, science and Genetics and Bioengineering; to be able to apply theoretical and applied knowledge in these areas to complex engineering problems.
• To be able to identify, define, formulate and solve complex Genetics and Bioengineering problems; to be able to select and apply appropriate analysis and modeling methods for this purpose.
• Designs a complex system, process, device or product under realistic constraints and conditions to meet specific requirements; applies modern design methods for this purpose. (Depending on the nature of the design, realistic constraints and conditions include elements such as economy, environmental problems, sustainability, manufacturability, ethics, health, safety, social and political problems).
• To be able to develop, select and use modern techniques and tools required for the analysis and solution of complex problems encountered in Genetics and Bioengineering applications.
• To be able to design and conduct experiments, collect data, analyze and interpret results for the investigation of complex Genetics and Bioengineering problems or research topics.
• To be able to work effectively within the discipline of Genetics and Bioengineering and in multidisciplinary teams; to be able to work individually.
• To be able to communicate effectively in oral and written Turkish; to be able to write effective reports and understand written reports, to be able to prepare design and production reports, to be able to make effective presentations, to be able to give and receive clear and understandable instructions.
• To have knowledge about the effects of Genetics and Bioengineering applications on health, environment and safety in universal and social dimensions and the problems of the age reflected in the field of engineering and the legal consequences of engineering solutions.
• Acting in accordance with ethical principles, professional and ethical responsibility awareness; knowledge of standards used in engineering applications.
• To have knowledge about business life practices such as project management, risk management and change management; to be aware of entrepreneurship and innovation; to have knowledge about sustainable development.
• To be able to collect information and communicate with colleagues on topics related to Genetics and Bioengineering using a foreign language.
• To be able to use a second foreign language at intermediate level.
• Recognizes the necessity of lifelong learning; accesses information, follows developments in science and technology and constantly renews himself/herself; relates the knowledge accumulated throughout the history of humanity to the field of Genetics and Bioengineering.

Measurement and evaluation methods; Exam types and their contribution to the course success grade are determined by the senates of higher education institutions in accordance with the basic principles determined by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) on these issues. Different methods such as participation, homework, project, practice, midterm exam and final exam are used in measurement and evaluation. In evaluating student success, success grades are calculated by taking into account all students in the course and letter or grade-based systems are used.

In measurement and evaluation, Article 24 of the Izmir University of Economics Associate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulation, given below, applies.

ARTICLE 24 – (1) The grading criteria, such as semester and end of semester exams, assignments, applications, and etc.to be taken into consideration in determining the success of the course, and their percentages are determined by the faculty members/lecturers that teach the courses.  The grading criteria and their percentages are announced to the students on the University web page for ECTS Catalogue.

(2) Students’ success for any course is determined by the instructor that teaches the course with a letter grade by taking the grading criteria into consideration. In the appraisal of the letter grade, students’ performance in the mid-term, end of semester exam, and semester studies, and his/her attendance to courses and applications are taken into consideration.

a) (Change:OG-17.08.2015/29448)The coefficients, points, and status for the letter grades included in calculating the grade averages are stated below:

b) (Change OG 28.08.2013/28749) (Change:OG-17.08.2015/29448) Grade of NA (non-attendance) is issued by the instructor for students, who fail to fulfill the attendance and/or requirements of the course. Grade of NA is considered as 0, 00 (zero) in in calculating the grade averages.

(3) The grades that are not included in the averages are specified below:

a) Grade of S (Satisfactory) is given to students who are successful in non-credited courses.

b) Grade of U (Unsatisfactory) is given to students who are unsuccessful in non-credited courses.

c) Grade of EX (Exempt), is given to students who are exempt from some of the courses in the curriculum.

ç) Grade of I (Incomplete), is given to students who are not able to meet all the course requirements at the end of the semester or summer school due to a valid justification accepted by the instructor. Students who receive a letter grade “I” must complete their missing course requirements and receive a letter grade within one week following the date the end of semester or summer school grades submitted.  However, in the event of special cases, this period can be extended until two weeks before the beginning of registration for the next semester, upon the recommendation of the respective department head and the decision of the respective administrative board. Otherwise, grade of “I” will automatically become grade of “FF” or grade of “U”.

d) (Change:OG-17.08.2015/29448) (Change OG 01.06.2016/29729)  Grade of W (Withdrawal) is used for courses the student withdraws from upon the recommendation of the advisor and the permission of the instructor that teaches the course. (Add OG-14/7/2017- 30124) Student can withdraw on the dates specified in the academic calendar. A student is not allowed to withdraw from compulsory courses, courses taken to increase the grades, courses he/she has to repeat, and received grade “W” before, which are not included in the grade average, during the first two semesters of his/ her associate/undergraduate degree program. Freshmen of undergraduate programs can only withdraw from general education courses that may be considered as elective courses in their instruction plans. A student is allowed to withdraw from one course, including double major, minor, or certificate program courses, at the most in one semester, and two courses at the most during his/ her associate degree study, and six courses during his/her undergraduate study upon the recommendation of the advisor and the permission of the instructor that teaches the course. In accordance with the protocols made between Izmir University of Economics and educational institutions or official authorities abroad, the exchange program students studying at Izmir University of Economics may withdraw from courses upon the recommendation of Office of International Relations Directorate and the permission of the instructor.  In this case, the rules concerning the grade of “W” will not be applied to these students.

e) (Add OG 28.08.2013/28749) Grade of NI (Not included) is issued to identify the courses taken by the student which are not included in the GPA of the student. This grade is reported in the students’ transcripts with the respective letter grade. Such courses are not counted as the courses in the program that the student is registered to.

f) (Add OG 22.01.2014/28890)  Grade of P (Successful Progress) is given to students, who continue to the courses that are not included in the GPA that has a period exceeding one semester, and regularly performs the academic studies for the respective semester.

The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) is responsible for the planning, organization, management, and supervision of education, training, and other activities carried out in higher education institutions. "University Monitoring and Evaluation Reports" of higher education institutions, prepared annually within the criteria determined by YÖK, are published. Reports prepared according to these reports, containing quantitative and qualitative evaluations of higher education institutions, are shared with the public by YÖK.

Every year, YÖK publishes the "Foundation Higher Education Institutions Report", which includes academic, administrative, and financial data on foundation higher education institutions. These reports, which include quantitative and qualitative evaluations of foundation higher education institutions, are shared with the public by YÖK.

Quality assurance of undergraduate programs in higher education is provided according to the "Procedures and Principles for Providing Quality Assurance of Higher Education Diploma Programs":

1. Design and Approval of Curriculum:

1.1. YÖK determines the minimum standards and criteria required to open undergraduate departments and programs in higher education institutions.

1.2. The curriculum of undergraduate programs in higher education institutions and the learning outcomes that each program will bring to the student are determined by the senates of higher education institutions by the fundamental principles determined by YÖK on these issues.

1.3. Higher education institutions implement the curriculum of National Core Education Programs with the approval of the Council of Higher Education after being accepted by the relevant Deans Council.

2. Measurement-Evaluation: How to measure and evaluate the learning outcomes that each undergraduate program will provide to the student is carried out by the education, training, and examination regulations prepared by higher education institutions by the fundamental principles determined by the Council of Higher Education on these issues.

3. Certification: Students enrolled in undergraduate programs, if they successfully complete the course credits and other obligations determined by higher education institutions, receive a bachelor's degree.

4. Self-Evaluation-External Evaluation: In continuous monitoring, higher education institutions submit the "Institutional Internal Evaluation Reports" of the previous year into the Information System prepared by the Turkish Higher Education Quality Council (YÖKAK) at the beginning of each year. The "Institutional Feedback Report" prepared by YÖKAK regarding the external evaluation of higher education institutions is shared with the public. In addition, accreditation decisions made by accreditation bodies authorized or recognized by YÖKAK also show that the quality assurance of the programs' qualifications is ensured. It conducts regular review activities regarding the qualifications determined by the YÖKAK legislation.

Departments also carry out all the necessary work in accordance with BOLOGNA criteria, EUR-ACE and MÜDEK accreditation rules. In addition, each student and each course is individually monitored in accordance with the program qualifications, and it is proven that each student has acquired all the qualifications required by the program.

Izmir University of Economics accepts Turkish national students who have graduated from high school or equivalent schools through the central entrance exam conducted by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM).

International students who graduate from high school or equivalent schools have the right to directly apply to Izmir University of Economics if they meet the admission criteria. Admission criteria include scores from internationally recognized exams (e.g. SAT, GCE, IB) or university entrance exams of some countries (e.g. Syria, Iran, China).

Engineers have always tried to provide practical and feasible solutions to real life problems. Design is an important step in Engineering. Genetic and Bioengineers work with other engineers in the design phase of new products. Graduates of Genetics and Bioengineering can work as researchers and managers in industrial (health, chemical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, food) organizations operating in various fields of biotechnology, medical and diagnostic centers, public institutions, as well as at all levels of environmental protection, agriculture and health sectors such as design, production, marketing, research and development. Graduates of Genetics and Bioengineering will have expertise in a multidisciplinary field and will therefore be equipped to work as leaders in more than one business field.
